According to Moral Mazes the above is not quite correct; there is an asymmetry between how credit and blame flow. That is, in companies the bad news never flows up. Many times, in practice, the boss doesn't get bad news. Bad news it walled off and dealt with by the first supervisor to encounter it. Somebody who lets bad news flow up to his boss is not doing his job.
