BigHook2006: If we could build it from scratch . . . 1Sept06

Welcome to BigHook2006!

[this page is under construction]

This year's theme, "If we could build it from scratch . . . " begs what would we build this time?" It is not an entirely heuristic exercise; in all previous history communications networks have been built for a specific application, yet within our lifetimes we've built an entirely new kind of any-app network.

Maybe we could do it again. What would it take? (Let's discuss.)

And what would we build? To answer that, we need to know both (a) what we value about the Internet and (b) what we believe could be done better. Both of these will be discussion starters at BigHook2006

David Clark, one of the original proponents of the end-to-end principle has kicked off a more radical rethinking [Tussle in Cyberspace: Defining Tomorrow's Internet.pdf, Future Generation Internet Architecture.pdf, Wired article on Clark's idea]. In this context, IPv6 was a minor, incremental rework.
